Scott Barron won as President over Mark Staton by an overwhelming margin. Greg Bell won a close race for the Vice- Presidency against Matt Miller; Neil Ruth won the Treasurer’s position over Andrea Williams, and Dana Jackson was uncontest ed for the job of Secretary. With approximately 45% of the student body voting, the elections this year obtained the largest turn out by far than in recent school years. Chris Harrison, current SGA President, stated, “I feel very positive about the election and the large student turnout. With more students voting the greater the chances are of a student who the student body wants for office be ing in office.” The March 27th election was actually the second election that was held. The first one which was scheduled on March 20th was de clared invalid for two major reasons. The first reason was that there was a controversy about whether or not seniors could vote. In the past seniors did not vote, but in this election seniors voiced the opinion that they should be allowed to vote. The constitution states, “The President, Vice- President, Secretary, and Treas urer shall be nominated by petition and shall be elected by the Student Body at large.” This does not specifically state that Seniors can not vote. Seniors were allowed to vote in the second election. The second reason for the ori ginal election to be declared invalid was because Gray Smith became extremely upset about not being able to vote as a Senior. Smith dur ing the lunch hour threw the ballot box out the cafeteria door scatter ing votes everywhere. After this the election was called off and postponed until a later date. Another controversy surroun ding the election dealt with the closeness of the race, and some problems dealing with the counting of votes. The Senate was asked to decide if the election was valid. The election votes were counted many times, with the first two counts showing Greg Bell the win ner, but the counts were by dif ferent margins. When it was counted the third time there was a tie of 191-191. And the counts following that showed a tie. However, it was rumored that Matt Miller was present in the room while the votes were being counted. It was also stated that Steve Phanco, the chairman of the elections committee, was not pre sent when it was first declared a tie. These problems are what led to the decision to allow the Senate to determine the validity of the elec tion. If the election was valid the first count would be accepted and Greg Bell would be the winner. If it was invalid, a whole new election would have occurred. Steve Phan co, Chris Harrison, Matt Miller, and Greg Bell all presented their views to the Senate. The vote was taken and 11 declared the election valid while 5 declared the election invalid. Steve Phanco stated, “I just wanted to have the fairest elec tion possible and the decision to take it to the Senate seemed the best thing to do.” The elections for the past four years have been controversial because of the vagueness of the constitution regarding elections. SGA is now working on revamping the whole constitution, especially the part pertaining to elections, to eliminate vagueness and hopefully make a smoother course for elec tions next year. Spring Production In Owen //i By GREG HUNGERFORD Features Contributor From May 7 to May 12 the Mars Hill College Theatre Arts Depart ment will present Oliver Gold smith’s classic comedy, “She Stoops to Conquer.” Goldsmith originally titled the play “She Stoops to Conquer or The Mis takes of a Night”. For its delight ful comedy of errors style, wherein the characters employ disguises and deception against one another. The piece is a fast-paced “romp” in the country, providing the aud ience with a view of virtually non stop action and the pleasure of virtually noji-stop laughter. As grand master and chief per petrator of all this fun, the Theatre Arts Department is fortunate to have as guest director Dr. William Martin. Well trained in Classical Drama, Dr. Martin received his B.A. and M.A. from Bob Jones University and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He has directed many productions, mostly classics, at various college and universities around the nation, as well as several New York shows, including the 1975 Broadway pro duction of The Lieutenant, which collected five Tony Award nominations and six Drama Desk Award nominations, among them, “Best Director.” Although Dr. Martin has work ed in many places, he says he always enjoys coming back to Mars Hill where he directed “The Tempest” for the Theatre Arts Department in 1979. For S.A.R.T. he has directed “Fiddler on the Roof,” “On Golden Pond,” “Magnets,” and his own adapta tion of “To Kill A Mockingbird.” He is currently working on a ver sion of “The Three Muskateers” which will be produced this sum mer at Heritage Repertory Theatre in Charlottesville, Va., where he serves as Artistic Director. Dr. Martin has hit upon the idea of telling the story of “She Stoops to Conquer” through the eyes of the household servants set in a rambling old Georgian house. He feels the idea of the play was “for the lower class to make fun of the pretentions of the rich who romped in the country.” Through the narration and actions of the servants artd kitchen wenches, we learn of the craziness and tom foolery going on above stairs as the heroine “stoops” below her sta tion in life to disguise herself as a barmaid in order to capture a lover (or, I suppose we would say, a hus band). Through the use of period costumes and manners, the sexual innuendoes provided within the script, and his own injection of English kitchen and pub songs. Dr. Martin is causing “She Stoops to Conquer” to come together as a beautiful bawdy production of what “Doctor” Goldsmith would have wished — a criticism of high society. Curtain time for these six nights of classic entertainment is 8:00 p.m. May 7-11, and 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 12.
